In these uncertain times, people only want one thing: tickets to the movie Barbie. The adaptation of Greta Gerwig’s iconic puppet series hits theaters on July 21, 2023. And while I can’t tell you exactly what the movie is about (read more here), I do know enough to be completely obsessed.

With every new behind-the-scenes photo or viral teaser, there’s no visible story—just a hit of dopamine and a Pepto Bismol-infused dose of childhood nostalgia. Only with these feelings, Barbie managed to conquer the world
The latest trailer, released on April , is a drunkenly chaotic viewing experience. It opens with a shot of Barbie (Margot Robbie) slipping off her featherbed so her bare feet are permanently frozen in a poignant pose. This obvious disrespect for the health of the legs immediately mocks the unrealistic standards of the body that have shaped the It-girl image of Barbie. And it’s a harbinger of many delightful oddities to come.
During the nearly two-minute sequence, everything feels tacky and shiny (as it should). We have pink sand, cartoon buildings and plastic convertibles. The cast ranges from Dua Lipa to Issa Raen and Canadian actor Michael Ceran. We have a sea of beautiful styles and holiday wear, including sugar tweed trousers, retro men’s trousers and lots of gingham. Designed by Jacqueline Durran, the costumes do not appear to have designer labels, further illustrating the pretense of Barbie Land. But this extensive world-building is not limited to marketing the film. Barbie isn’t just a movie, it’s a pop culture movement that spans industries. Look no further than the posts.
The Barbie fiction of pop culture rejects the unattainable exclusivity that has historically obscured the doll’s legacy. By embracing its over-the-top nature and doubling down on its unrealistic campiness, The Barbie Movie has created an interactive story that compels us all to participate. Barbie is for everyone because Barbie is for no one. Reclaiming all its tired tropes, the Barbie movie democratizes the ultimate symbol of aspiration. And for a franchise that has long been considered “girly” and therefore less relevant, the prevalence of Barbie in 2023 is quite radical. The sheer excitement has even inspired a cultural revival of decades-old puppet-centric animated films—nay, “old texts.”
It’s not hard to see why we’re all flocking to Barbieland right now. Yes, the movie Barbie offers “look, beautiful!” mercy of daily congestion. But with self-aware jokes and over-embellished artificial imagery, it also promises deeper commentary. The film’s marketing is deliberately vague and plotless. Margot Robbie has been famously tight-lipped about the project, aside from the occasional “expect the unexpected.” In itself, each peek is a fever dream of a sugar-coated void where the characters play in blissful ignorance. And I think that’s the point. Barbie is a genetically engineered carrot dangling in front of us all only to deliver a real message when we least expect it.
Social media profiles have been replaced by edited movie posters everywhere, the hot pink of the franchise is still a trendy color, and there are many secret series dedicated to unraveling the film’s marketing clues. Gerwig’s revamped version of Barbie is on her way to global dominance with no end in sight. One day there may be nothing else – the world is just Barbie. And you know what? I’m fine with that
In July of this year, the internet couldn’t stop drooling over images of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, spray tanned in golden California goodness, rolling around in dazzling neon chairs on Venice Beach. News of Robbie’s role as the iconic Mattel doll was confirmed in April, but has been rumored for much longer. But the film itself, a live-action adaptation of the Barbie world, has been in the works since 201 (!), Entertainment Weekly reports. Here’s a look at that and everything else you need to know about the animated Barbie movie.

We just got a new look for the Barbie movie
This article was originally published in December 2022 and has been update.
Think we’re all tired of singing “Come on Barbie, let’s party?” when is barbie coming out in july 2023? Considering how long the film has already been teased, it’s not an entirely unfair question. Despite the fact that the first official Barbie teaser just dropped, the movie has been around much longer in its hype era. RELATED: Barbiecore and Western Wear are a perfect match
When will Barbie be released?
The film is scheduled to release on July 21, 2023.
Who stars in the live action movie Barbie?
Directed by Greta Gerwig, movie stars Margot Robbie and (who else?) Ken Ryan Gosling. And alongside the plastic power couple is a seriously packed star cast, some of whom appear in the trailer. It stars Issa Rae, Canadian Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Hari Nef and Will Ferrell. When the studio unveiled brand new character posters for the film on April , it was also revealed that singer Dua Lipa will play a mermaid in the film.
What happens in the Barbie trailers?
Fortunately, fans got a closer look at the upcoming film on April when Warner Bros. released another longer trailer. We get a hint of a storyline where Barbie and Ken travel from Barbie Land to the real world, and lots of iconic Barbie fashion – think pink gingham and marabou mules for the girls and denim vests and neon roller skates for the boys.
